Shifting into a high-rise society in Gurgaon is settled at the society office before it is settled with the truck: get the move-in rules, a lift slot and a gate pass in writing, then hand them to your packers. Skip this, and a crew can stand outside the gate for an hour with a loaded vehicle.

Wikipedia's article on Gurgaon says the city's housing is mostly attached housing and that high-rise residential towers are growing in popularity. So a tower move is now the ordinary kind of move here. The plan below is the one we use at Allied Pack & Move when a family tells us they are going into a society; the city-level picture is on our page for packers and movers in Gurgaon.

Who sets the move-in rules in a Gurgaon tower society?

Usually the society's own management body does. Wikipedia describes a resident welfare association (RWA) as a non-governmental group that represents the residents of a locality, with its own bye-laws, elected leadership and membership. It is not a government office, and its rules for moving trucks are its own.

That is why we do not quote a "standard" rule here. One society may ask for a lift booking and a refundable deposit. Another may ask only for a gate pass. A third may allow goods vehicles in only at certain hours. We treat each of these as a question to put to the office, not as a fact to assume.

What should you ask the society office before the date is fixed?

Ask these questions, and ask them for both addresses if you are leaving a society too:

  • Which days and hours are goods vehicles and the service lift allowed?
  • Is a lift booking needed, and for how long can it be held?
  • Does the crew need passes, ID copies or vehicle numbers at the gate?
  • Is there a move-in or move-out intimation, a deposit or a dues clearance?
  • Where may the truck stand, and is there a height limit at the basement or the gate?
  • Is there a rule on noise, on carrying cartons through the main lobby, or on lift protection?

If the new flat is in a project that is still being handed over, the developer's possession paperwork matters as well. The Haryana Real Estate Regulatory Authority says the state has set up two authorities, one for Gurugram district and one for the rest of Haryana, to deal with disputes between developers and apartment buyers. We are movers, not advisers on that process, so treat it as a place to read up and not as our advice. Our guide to a new flat on the Dwarka Expressway looks at the handover side from the movers' end.

How does lift use change the plan for a high-rise move?

The lift sets the length of the day. A tower flat is loaded through one service lift shared with every other household in the tower, so a slot of a fixed length decides how many trips the crew can make. For a high floor, we split the day into rounds: furniture first, cartons next, and fragile boxes last, so the lift is used in an efficient order.

Two things help. First, put every carton in the room it belongs to before the crew arrives, with the room name on at least two sides. Second, clear the corridor and the door of the flat. A crew that has to move a shoe rack before it can start is losing lift time. More on the packing side is on our packing and unpacking page.

What does a high-rise moving-day checklist look like?

Key takeaway

Three things must be in hand before the truck leaves: the society's permission, a booked lift slot and a named person with keys at the new flat.

Item Old society New society
Written permission or gate pass Move-out intimation, if the society asks for one Move-in permission with vehicle number
Lift booking Confirm the slot and its length Confirm the slot and its length
Dues and deposits Clearance, if the society asks for it Deposit, if the society asks for it
Parking for the truck Where it may stand to load Where it may stand to unload
Person with the keys Present for the final check Present with the room plan
Protection Lift and corridor covers, if the society asks Same

Save the table as a note on your phone and fill it in as the office replies. Household shifting at Allied runs on the same inputs: you tell us the tower, the floor, the lift situation and the date, and we prepare a written quote.

What if the society says no to your date?

Move the date, not the plan. A society may not allow goods movement on the day you chose, or the lift may already be taken by another family. Ask for the next available slot and tell your packers right away. A crew can accept a changed date much more easily than a changed arrival time on the day itself.

If both slots are tight, say so when you ask for the quote. Staged loading, an earlier start, or splitting the load into two trips can be planned, but only if the crew is told in advance.

What should you carry yourself on moving day?

Keep documents, valuables, medicines, chargers and a day-one bag with you and not in the truck. Keep the society permission as a printout or a clear screenshot, since signal at a basement gate can be weak. Photograph the lift and lobby before the crew starts, so that any question later can be settled calmly.
